Next week, the fourth grade students will be creating salt dough maps of Alaska as part of our Alaska unit. To help us with the maps, we are looking for families who may be able to make a batch or two of salt dough and send it in for our project. You can find a recipe for salt dough (otherwise known as homemade playdough) below, but if you have a favorite recipe you would like to use, that would be wonderful.
If you can help, we would like to have the salt dough brought in on Tuesday, October 5. Thank you for your help!
Salt dough recipe
There are many recipes for salt dough, otherwise known as playdough, out there. This is the best one I’ve found so far. Please feel free to use any recipe you’d like.
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup cold water
1 Tbls vegetable oil
Put all into a kettle and cook over medium-low heat until it forms a soft ball of dough. Let cool and knead in hands. Keep stored in a covered container or plastic bag.
Please do not put in food coloring, as we will be adding our own colors later.
Reminder: There is no school tomorrow (October 1) for teacher professional development
Next week:
In reading, we will continue to look at nonfiction text elements.
In math, we will continue Unit 3, which focuses on simple multiplication and division. It would be beneficial for students to practice their math facts for a bit each night.
In writing, we will look at writing organization.
In social studies, we will be working on Alaska's geography. Students will be practicing creating Alaska maps in class. They will have a map quiz next Friday.
